Medora, North Dakota | September 1974 & June 2016
Excerpt from my grandmother’s travel journal on September 5th, 1974: “Went into Medora for gas. Sunny and warm, all blue sky now. Town looks really Western – wood buildings, Bad Land Saloon, the Bad Lands Cowboy (a tiny newspaper), the Rough Rider Hotel, and the post office & bank together in a small cabin.”
It was in the post office that I learned the fate of the tree in my grandfather’s photograph. According to a bookstore owner on the opposite corner, a camper had struck the tree several years ago. The town tried to save it, but it had become so rotten that it was beyond saving.
