from my grandmother’s travel journal on April 24th, 1979: “And between
green, green oaks & other leaf-trees down to the American River
again. Cabin of James Marshall, discoverer of the California gold! Small
cemetery there too with a few stones, all ‘natives of Ireland’ &
'Co. Donegal’. Far from home!”
